Defining Your Version of Health (It Doesn’t Have to Look Like Anyone Else’s)

Open any feed and within thirty seconds someone will tell you what “healthy” is supposed to look like. Six-pack abs. A blistering Hyrox finish time. A particular weight, a particular shape, a particular before-and-after. It’s loud, it’s constant, and it’s quietly doing a lot of damage - because it convinces people that unless their health looks like that, it doesn’t count.

The feed has an opinion on your body. It shouldn’t.

Social media has turned health into a single, narrow image - and then sold that image back to you on repeat. For one person “fit” means visible abs. For another it’s racing something like a Hyrox and chasing a finish time. There’s nothing wrong with either of those goals if they’re genuinely yours. The problem is when someone else’s goal gets presented as the only finish line, and everyone who doesn’t match it is made to feel like they’re failing.

Why that picture stops people before they start

Here’s what that constant comparison actually does: it intimidates, and it breeds resentment. If the only version of “fit” you ever see is an extreme one, starting feels pointless - the gap looks too big to bother. People look at that image, decide it’s not for them, and never take the first step. Or they start carrying a quiet resentment toward the whole world of fitness, as if it belongs to someone else. None of that is helpful to you. None of it makes you healthier. It just keeps you on the sidelines.

At STIMULUS, we don’t have a bias

This is where we’re different. We don’t push one look, one goal or one definition of health onto anyone. Fitness has an enormous amount to offer - strength, energy, confidence, longevity, performance, and yes, aesthetics too - and we have the tools and the expert coaches to take you wherever you genuinely want to go. Want to chase a physique goal? We can coach that. Want to simply feel strong, move well and keep up with your life? We can coach that just as seriously. Your goal is the brief; we don’t replace it with ours.

When “peak condition” quietly costs you your health

But we’ll always be honest with you, and here’s our honest line in the sand: we regularly see people risk their actual health to reach a peak of performance or aesthetics. Extreme dieting, training through injury, grinding toward a race result or a “shredded” look at the cost of their hormones, their relationship with food, their joints and their sanity. That’s the part we don’t agree with. Looking healthy and being healthy are not the same thing, and chasing the look - or the finish time - at the expense of the substance is a trade we’ll never push you toward.

Peak condition for a photo or a finish line is not the same as health for a life. We’ll help you tell the difference.

So what is health, to us?

Strip away the noise and our definition is refreshingly grounded. Health, to us, is about a few things that genuinely move the needle on how long and how well you live:

  • Reducing injury - building a body that’s robust, mobile and resilient, so training adds to your life instead of breaking it down.

  • Improving your health markers - the things that actually predict a long, capable life: strength, VO2 max, body composition, blood pressure, resting heart rate, blood sugar, energy and sleep.

  • Developing the right mindset - one that’s aware of what your body needs, fair to yourself when life gets messy, but also disciplined enough to keep showing up.

Notice what’s not on that list: a specific weight, a specific look, or anyone else’s standard. Those are outcomes you might choose to chase later - they’re not the definition of being healthy.

First, we build the foundation of health

Everything we do starts with what we call the foundation of health: a strong, resilient body, health markers moving in the right direction, and a mindset that’s aware, fair and disciplined. Get that foundation solid and you’ve got something most of the people chasing abs on the internet don’t actually have - real health, the kind that holds up for decades, not just for a photo.

Then it’s entirely your call where you take it

Once that foundation is nailed, the door is wide open. Want to push on toward a physique goal, your first Hyrox, a performance target, a personal best? Brilliant - and now you can do it from a position of strength rather than at the expense of your health. Happy to simply maintain a strong, capable, energetic body that lets you live well? That’s a complete, valid, brilliant version of fit too. There’s no single destination here. There’s a solid foundation, and then there’s your choice.

That’s what defining your version of health really means: deciding for yourself, free of the feed’s opinion. If you want expert coaches who’ll help you build the foundation first and then back whatever you choose to build on top of it, come and have a conversation with us. No bias, no judgement - just your version of healthy, done properly.

Hope this helps brings some clarity for you,
