How Jess Kept Training Through a Wedding, Pregnancy and a Return to Work

Most fitness content assumes life holds still while you train. Find the gap in the calendar, follow the plan, get the result. Real life doesn't work like that, and the members who actually stick around long enough to see change are almost always the ones navigating something happening around the training, not in a vacuum away from it.

Jess is a good example of what that actually looks like in practice.

Four different versions of the same commitment

During her time as a member, Jess has trained through her wedding, through pregnancy, through the postpartum period, and through returning to work. Four genuinely different physical and mental states, each with completely different capacity, energy and priorities. A rigid programme designed for "getting fit for the wedding" would have fallen apart the moment the goalposts moved, which they did, repeatedly, as her life changed.

What kept her training wasn't a single plan that happened to work throughout. It was a coaching relationship that adjusted every time her circumstances did.

Why personalisation matters more than programming

There's a tendency in fitness marketing to sell programming as the thing you need, like these magic, life-changing week challenges we see everyone selling. Programming matters, but it's not what makes training survive real life. What makes it survive is whether the person coaching you is actually paying attention to what's changed since the last time you spoke.

Jess put it simply: "I love that it's been so personalised to me and my journey." That's not a throwaway compliment. It's the actual mechanism behind why she's still training now, through circumstances that would have derailed a rigid programme entirely.

The pattern worth noticing

If you look at the members who've trained with us the longest, the common thread isn't that their lives stayed simple. It's the opposite. Weddings, pregnancies, career changes, house moves, the members who stick around are the ones whose training adapted alongside all of it, rather than demanding they pause their life to fit the programme.

That's a genuinely different model to the six-week challenge or the January/September reset. Those are built for a version of life that holds still for six weeks and relay on motivation. Most people's lives don't.

What this actually means if you're starting from scratch

If you're looking at getting back into training and wondering whether it'll survive whatever's actually going on in your life right now, kids, work, a big life change, that's the right question to be asking. The answer isn't to wait until things calm down. It's to find coaching that's built to move with you rather than around a fixed plan that assumes nothing will change.

We love to coach training as a dimmer switch at STIMULUS. There are times to turn it up and dial it down. But it's over on/off. That way, the habit says alive and you're always building momentum.
